Revitalising Eyebrows with FUE Hair Transplant

Based on the art of Chinese face reading, or feng shui, eyebrows are one of the first things we look at when we meet new people because they are a prominent feature of the face.

Back in ancient China, it was considered a blessing to have thick, smooth, and defined eyebrows. On the other hand, short and thin eyebrows were regarded as inauspicious. Fast-forward to present day, a set of thick, defined eyebrows remain highly coveted among both men and women.

Anatomy of eyebrow

Eyebrow can be divided into 3 sections: Head, body, and tail.

The head is the innermost part of the eyebrow where it points upwards for 0.5 to 0.7 cm. The hair around the head section is often fine and are lighter in colour.

The body of the eyebrow extends from the head to about 2.5 cm. The hair in the body area is often the most dense and dark. The hairs at the upper part of the body tend to point downwards, and the hairs at the lower part of the body tend to point upwards, forming a herringbone pattern, giving the eyebrow the structure and density.

The tail forms the outermost part of the eyebrow. It is typically about 2 cm where it joins the body until the tail ends. The hairs at the tail are often small, fine hairs. The tail usually becomes less pronounced with age.

Eyebrow tattoo and embroidery

Back in the olden days, eyebrow tattoo used to be common among women. They used tattoo ink to create an appearance of a set of dark, neatly shaped eyebrows. Eyebrow tattoo usually create an extremely harsh, almost exaggerated look. Over the years, the ink may fade to a greyish, bluish colour, creating a very unnatural appearance.

The rapid evolution of semi-permanent eyebrows become increasingly popular because of its natural-looking result and they last for a couple of years. It works by depositing tiny amounts of dark pigments via a microblade or needles under the superficial layer of the skin, using short, fine strokes that resemble the hairs on the brows.

Eyebrow embroidery and tattoos are offered by salons. The lack of regulation and quality monitoring of spas and salons may result in a negative experience at these salons. In some cases, the outcome may not be ideal and you may have to live with the awkward shape and colour of the brows until the pigments fade, which could take a couple of years.

In the worst-case scenario, not following safety protocols may result in severe infections if therapists don’t use single use, disposable needles and supplies.

FUE hair transplant

Hair transplantation for eyebrows loss first started in 1939. It has become a vastly popular treatment due to its natural results.

Hair transplantation can only be carried out by a certified doctor. The doctor moves hair from the harvesting site to fill your brows. Harvesting site are most commonly the back of the scalp, the nape of the neck and above the ears.

During the treatment, the doctor will shave a small area of the scalp and remove the hair follicles one by one from the harvesting site. The harvesting site will be covered with small holes, which your existing hair will grow and subsequently cover the harvesting site.

After the doctor prepares the graft, the doctor cleans and numbs the eyebrows and creates tiny holes with a needle. He will meticulously place the sorted graft in each of the holes.

Depending on the number of grafts, the process will take about 3 to 4 hours.

After the surgery, the harvesting and recipient sites may be very tender. You may require to take pain relief medication for a few days. Your doctor may also recommend that you wear bandages over your scalp for a few days.

Most people should be able to go back to work after 3 to 5 days post-surgery.

It is perfectly normal for the transplanted hair to fall out after 2 to 3 weeks. With the healthy follicles in the eyebrows, you should notice new hair growth within a few months. Your doctor may prescribe hair growth tonic such as minoxidil to improve hair growth after transplantation.
