The Lowdown On Effective Ways To Age-Proof Your Eyes

When we meet people for the first time, chances are you will first be drawn to their eyes before you notice other parts of the face. Hence, you want to commit to caring for your eyes as much as you possibly can.

The eyes are among the first areas to reveal the very first signs of ageing. But why does that happen and what can you do about it?

Skin around the eyes is extremely thin

Young, healthy skin is usually characterized by a thick epidermis with an abundance of collagen and elastin. These are key components that provide the skin firmness and elasticity.

It is worth noting that the skin around the eyes is particularly thin compared to the rest of the body. This results in your eyes becoming more delicate and susceptible to premature ageing.

Fragile, thin skin around the eyes also means that there is significantly less collagen, elastin and oil glands present around the eyes. With diminished functioning of oil glands and slower cell renewal, you can expect to see early signs of ageing, such as fine lines, dark eye circles, and droopy eyelids.

After the age of 20, our body begin to produce about 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year. By the time we reach our mid-40s, the skin becomes visibly thinner and fragile.

Extrinsic ageing exacerbates skin ageing

Sometimes referred to as photo-ageing, extrinsic ageing is caused by external stressors. Common areas exposed to the sun include the face, neck and arms. Constant UV exposure without appropriate sun protection will damage skin cells and decrease their productivity.

Repetitive facial movements and expressions contribute to formation of dynamic lines around the eyes. Each time you make a facial movement such as squinting your eyes or laugh; these muscles move and form a groove under the skin’s surface.

Poor lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking alcohol and keeping late nights are other extrinsic factors that may accelerate the ageing process.

If left untreated, you may notice that your eyes may make you look older than you really are.

How to age-proof the eyes

Let’s be realistic – There is no way to entirely stop ageing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t put in effort to restore your skin’s integrity and preserve the radiance and youthful glow in your eyes.

ULTHERAPY Using micro-focused ultrasound energy, the treatment targets the subcutaneous tissue where the temperature reaches around 60°C, producing tiny thermal coagulation points at the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS layer. It contracts and stimulates collagen production in the skin.

Over the next 2-3 months post-treatment, you should notice the treated skin becoming tighter and more lifted. In particular, when Ultherapy treats the areas around the eyelids, the newly generated structural proteins will lift hooded eyelids, making them look more refreshed and youthful.

PICOSURE LASER As compared to traditional lasers, PicoSure laser delivers pulses that are about 1,000 times shorter in duration. This causes significantly less damage to the skin tissue. Through it targeted mode of delivery, PicoSure is able to reach the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production, causing minimal damage to surrounding tissue.

The PicoSure Focus treatment, a capability that is only available in PicoSure laser machine, concentrates the energy into tiny spots with 20 times more powerful than normal lens, to stimulate collagen and elastin production around the eyes.

This high energy creates micro-injury into the epidermis to form laser induced optical breakdown and induce an inflammatory response to start the healing process.

This is particularly useful for treating highly sensitive areas like the eyes where you want effective outcome with minimal downtime and discomfort.

Ensuring our eyes look well-rested, balanced and radiant is even more important now, with mandatory mask wearing due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A little bit goes a long way. Investing in a good anti-ageing skin care regime coupled with in-clinic treatments can effectively restore a youthful appearance to ageing eyes.
