Doctor's Advice for Managing Acne-Prone Skin

Our skin is the body's largest organ. This is sufficient reason for us to spend more time and effort to take care of our skin. Our skin is constantly exposed to harmful pollutants and UV rays that cause our skin to age prematurely.

Other than slowing down the production of collagen and elastin fibres, the skin can be affected by acne and acne scars. With many acne treatments in Singapore, it is increasingly challenging to discern which are effective and which are not.

We speak with one of the most popular aesthetic doctors in Singapore, Dr. Siew Tuck Wah as he tells us more about the do's and don’ts on how to manage acne-prone skin.

Do: Watch what you eat

Eat a balanced diet rich in fiber like green leafy vegetables, nuts, and food rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish and seafood. Drink lots of water to hydrate your body (and your skin) especially during hot and dry weather.

Do: Design a suitable skincare regime that works for you (and stick with it)

Everyone’s skin is different. People with oily skin are more prone to acne. Doctors usually recommend facial wash that contain glycolic and lactic acids.

When using makeup, always make sure that you change the applicators regularly so that they don’t support bacteria growth that may exacerbate the acne on the face.

Use items that are non-comedogenic. This means that these skincare products do not clog your pores.

Do: Exercise regularly

Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Having sufficient exercise does not only give you healthy skin but overall healthy body as well.

Exercising regularly encourages supply of blood flow to the skin. This means that the skin receives more oxygen and nutrients, keeping your skin plump and healthy at all times. The increased blood flow also aids in excreting wastes, which includes free radicals.

Do: See a doctor if problem is unmanageable

Nothing beats seeking professional help from the doctor. Depending on the severity of the acne, the doctor may prescribe topical creams or recommend carbon laser peeldual yellow laser, or AGNES acne treatment

A doctor does not only prescribe effective treatments but also assist you and monitor your development, guiding you along the way until your acne is finally resolved.

Don’t: Forget to change your bedsheets and pillow case regularly

Take a more proactive approach to change your bedsheets and pillow case regularly if you have sensitive skin or prone to suffer from acne outbreaks easily.

Other than bedsheets and pillow cases, make sure you also wash items that come into frequent contact with your skin, such as towels and clothes.

Don’t: Explore alternative remedies

Stop consulting Dr. Google. Not all remedies work for everyone. In fact, some remedies may worsen your condition. It is always best to consult a doctor if you wish to explore alternative remedies.

Don’t: Stress

Stress can cause your skin to develop acne. The stress hormones in your body will increase and stimulate more sebum and clog your pores. This will lead to increased breakouts and cause your skin to become redder and more inflamed.

Don’t: Wash your face too often

It may sound contradictory but washing your face too often may cause your skin to dry out and your body may produce more sebum, thinking that your face is too dry. And when your sebum production increases, there is a higher chance of developing acne.

Follow these simple tips and keep your skin in tip-top condition. Consult a doctor to develop and effective acne treatment.
